Idris Elba scoops Golden Globe nomination for playing Neil Cross's 'Luther'

Idris Elba, the star of BBC AMERICA’s critically acclaimed crime drama, Luther, has been nominated for a Golden Globe® Award, it was announced this week. He was nominated in the category Best Performance By An Actor in a Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Perry Simon, BBC Worldwide America’s GM, Channels says: “Idris’ portrayal of John Luther breaks the mould of TV detectives. He is a central character that is quite possibly just as dangerous as the criminals he’s chasing. Idris’ stellar performance truly deserves this nomination and has set a bench-mark for quality drama on BBC AMERICA.”

Elba plays the title role in the BBC AMERICA co-production about a brilliant and emotionally impulsive detective. The mini-series was lauded by fans and critics alike when it was first broadcast on BBC AMERICA in October. TV Guide said it was, “Criminally good... Luther is Prime Suspect on crack,” USA Today called it a “...terrific six part thriller... you have to watch,” and Variety declared “Luther is well worth the investment… there haven't been many recent offerings in this genre on either side of the pond superior to Luther.”

Luther was created and written by Neil Cross, the acclaimed suspense novelist and one of the lead writers on MI-5. You can watch a trailer for Luther below:

Google siri rival

Google siri rival

Google siri rival, Google to launch Siri rival? There are rumors that Google will launch a new voice assistant for Android smartphones to compete with Apple’s Siri. The new technology is expected to be out in a few weeks and will reportedly upgrade an Android app that lets users make calls and perform searches using voice commands. It is believed that Google Android will launch its own rival to Siri, the voice-activated personal assistant featured on the iPhone 4S.

Writing for AndroidAndMe.com, Taylor Wimberly claims that Android's Siri rival will be called Majel, in relation to Majel Barrett-Roddenberry - the voice of the Federation Computer from Star Trek.
"Majel," Wimberly claims, "is an evolution of Google's Voice Actions that is currently available on most Android phones with the addition of natural language processing.
"Where Voice Actions required you to issue specific commands like 'send text to...' or 'navigate to...', Majel will allow you to perform actions in your natural language similar to how Siri functions."
Wimberly believes that only Google search queries will be included with the initial release - which could be made available within the next two months - but more complex actions, like controlling the phone and applications with natural language commands, will come in a later update.
In an interview with Slashgear back in October, Google's Matias Duarte said of Android's voice actions: "Our approach is more like Star trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It's not that there's a personality, it doesn't have a name, it's just Computer."
This may come as an insult to Apple's Siri, which has clearly been developed to have a character - which has sometimes landed her in trouble. Siri contains references to film quotes, responses to flirting by its user and even a joke about the loss of two iPhone - referring to iPhone prototypes that have gone missing in bars in recent years.

Kendall Jenner the prom queen puts her model figure on show in playful frocks

Reality TV royalty: Kendall Jenner the prom queen puts her model figure on show in playful frocks

She has recently come under fire yet again for posing provocatively in a 'sexy' photo shoot.

But for her latest modelling job Kendall Jenner is seen in a more age-appropriate setting.

The 16-year-old graces the cover of Teen Prom magazine.

However with her statuesque height and mature features, she still looks older than her adolescent years.

In one of the shots, Kendall shows off a hint of her slim pins in a lavender beaded gown with a slit running up her slender thigh.

The fresh-faced teen also has her already towering 5'9 height boosted with a pair of cream platforms.

For the cover, Kendall is seen dressed in a demure turquoise strapless bejeweled dress.

This time the image captures the exact innocence of a girl at her tender age.

The striking brunette has on minimal make-up and wears her hair in a natural soft wave.

In an interview for the magazine, Kendall says she draws style inspiration from her three famous sisters, who co-own three branches of their fashion boutique Dash around the U.S and have their own clothing line.

'My three older sisters [Kourtney, Kim and Khloé] inspire me the most,' she says. 'I pull [my style] from each of them.'

The teen, who is fast overshadowing Kim and Co. said that when she was first thrusted in front of the cameras to film the famous family's long-running reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, she was nervous.

'I used to be really shy around the cameras when we started filming,' she tells the teen mag. 'But I think Kylie (her younger sister) and I are both used to it now. It’s normal for us.'

And she says it was no different when she embarked on her modelling career, which saw her walk down the runway for the first time earlier this year.

'I was really, really nervous and scared,' she recalls. 'I was like, "What if my walk isn’t right?"

'[My sisters] told me, "You’ll be fine, you’ll do great," and that made me feel so much better. They said, "Be you, have fun with it, be confident."

'Once I got out there, I felt more comfortable. When the lights are up, you can’t really see the audience, which made it a little better. I had a lot of fun. I want to do it again.'

She says her sisters, who have come under constant scrutiny since rising to fame, have given her some sage advice on the subject of unflattering comments.

'[They tell me] not to listen to what other people say because people are mean,' she says. 'I just don’t look at the Internet and what people say because it can bring you down.'

Kendall or rather, her management, just recently attracted criticism after the teen posed a little too provocatively in a very different photoshoot.

Her 'sexy' shoot, as it was marketed, for Lovecat magazine, saw Kendall posing in a tiny leather miniskirt.

In another shot the cheerleader throws her head back as she leans on a bathroom vanity in a short crochet dress.

The provocative images were subverted by whimsical cartoons that appeared in the magazine spread with her, of colourful woodland creatures.

Meanwhile Kendall and her younger sister Kylie, 14, are getting set to star in their own spin-off series.

As their older sister Kim's popularity suffers thanks to accusations that her marriage to Kris Humphries was simply a money-making scheme, the younger generation of Kardashians are being thrust further into the spotlight.

The head of the cable channel E! revealed she plans to add more Kardashians to the roster of TV shows featuring the family.

Bonnie Hammer said the network is looking at making shows featuring mum Kris Jenner's two daughters with husband Bruce.

The two youngest Kardashians feature in Keeping up with the Kardashians but have minor roles compared to the older sisters.

But, with Kris' careful coaching, they are emerging as young starlets on the scene.

Kendall's modelling career is going from strength to strength while Kylie is dating Australian pop star Cody Simpson.

Rob Kardashian, who was a runner up in the Dancing with the Stars reality show, is also being looked at for a possible show.

Hammer, 61, told The Hollywood Reporter magazine there could be 'two, three, even four Kardashian' spin-offs.

But the top TV executive, who was named as the second most powerful woman in Hollywood by the magazine, admitted the current crop of Kardashians was 'too fragile' for the network.

The family, run by matriarch Kris Jenner, have come under a blitz of negative publicity following Kim Kardashian's 72-day marriage.

Critics accused 31-year-old Kim, the most high profile of the sisters,of staging a sham marriage to cash in on a two hour TV special screened by E!.

The wedding was reported to have generated up to $18m in income for the Kardashians although mum Kris denied they had profited.

Hammer told the Hollywood Reporter the marriage was not a stunt.

But in a lengthy interview profiling her career Fuller also admitted that E! would not be so reliant on Kim Kardashian and the staged antics of her sisters.

She said of the show: 'I think it will have its own life expectancy and we'll go along with it and help hone what's right for E! and what's not right for E! as we develop a whole other world.'

Speaking of the short lived marriage she said: 'This was not a stunt. In no way did people believe this was going to happen.

'I think true Kardashian fans know that a bigger than life mistake can be made easily in their world. Everything they do is bigger than life. It's just part of their DNA.'

And all eyes will be on Kate Winslet after she scooped a nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Carnage and Best Actress in a Motion Picture or Miniseries for Mildred Pierce.

Flying the flag for the boys is George Clooney, whose two films The Descendants and The Ides Of March, made it onto the Best Motion Picture list.

They face competition from The Help, Hugo, Moneyball and Steven Spielberg production War Horse.

The coveted prize of Best Director will land in the lap of one of the lucky five; Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris, George Clooney for The Ides of March, Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist, Alexander Payne for The Descendants or Martin Scorsese for Hugo.

The nominations were announced today by Hollywood veteran Woody Harrelson, Modern Family star Sofia Vergara, Scottish hunk Gerard Butler and Rashida Jones at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, California.

Unlikely film The Artist topped the leaderboard, with the French film scooping six nominations.

Yet hot on its tale and tied in second place is sixties tale The Help and Clooney's Hawaiian family story The Descendants; with both films earning five nods including Best Motion Picture Drama.

Boardwalk Empire star Kelly Macdonald will battle Jessica Lange from American Horror Story, Maggie Smith of Downton Abbey, Sofia Vergara of Modern Family and Evan Rachel Wood for Mildred Pierce.

Best Actor for a Television Comedy Series category sees Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock take on David Duchovny of Californication, Johnny Galecki of The Big Bang Theory and Matt LeBlanc of Episodes.

There doesn't seem to be a clear runner for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical Film, with Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Brendan Gleeson (The Guard), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50), Ryan Gosling (Crazy, Stupid, Love) and Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris) all in the running.

The Flowers of War, In the Land of Blood of Honey, The Kid With a Bike, A Separation and The Skin I Live In will all compete for Best Foreign Film.

Ricky Gervais will return as the host, despite offending the entirety of the auditorium earlier this year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced through Twitter last month that the British comedian will reprise his role as presenter for the third time at the ceremony in January 2012.

A previous quip drew gasps when he referred to one film featuring ‘two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay, so the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then’.

He then added: 'My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke.'

The 50-year-old also said that Sex And The City 2 should have won the special effects award for ‘the team that airbrushed that poster... 'Girls, we know how old you are.'

Today he revealed he will be eating something light prior to popping on his tuxedo on the night, saying: 'I'll just have something light like beans on toast so I don't throw up all over Robert De Niro.'
