Gary Barlow vows: 'Sack Louis or I'll walk' as Simon Cowell plans to empty the X Factor judging panel

Simon Cowell plans to axe the entire X Factor judging panel as he desperately tries to recover from this years ratings slump.

But, sick of their constant rows, Gary Barlow apparently already plans to walk if the music mogul doesn't sack Louis Walsh.

This year's series has been the most explosive yet with a bullying row, drugs scandal and fixing claims.

On the way out? Simon is reportedly planning to axe all of the X factor judges: Louis Walsh, Tulisa Contostavlos, Kelly Rowland and Gary Barlow

But it has still lost about three million viewers since year as Gary, Louis, Tulisa Contostavlos and Kelly Rowland sit in the hot seats.

A source told the Scottish Daily Record: 'Simon invested a lot of his time and money making sure that the changes to the show would work but going by the viewing figures, they haven’t.

'Nobody seems to be able to satisfy him with reasons why the show hasn’t been as successful this year.

'He still believes the format is good and that there is life in The X Factor yet. But he’s not prepared to take any more chances, and if that means ripping the show apart and re-building it, that’s what he will have to do.

'He’s thinking about taking away everybody, from backstage staff right up to the judges, and starting all over again. It’s not a surprise to anyone and nobody is safe from the chop.'

Meanwhile, Gary Barlow has apparently given Simon an ultimatum over Louis Walsh: 'It’s him or me'.

The Take That singer has not held back in his contempt for the Irishman, accusing him of neglecting his acts.

A source told the Daily Mirror: 'Gary and Louis have completely different ideas of what this show is all about. Gary wants it to be a credible singing contest and Louis sees it as entertainment.

'Although he’s been outspoken defending his acts and criticising other people’s, Gary hates all the pantomime rowing and thinks Louis is behind most of it.

'He is also livid that Misha B was voted off last week as he feels she is hugely talented. He lays the blame for that squarely at Louis’ door.

'Gary is unsure about his future on the show. Three days ago he said he was looking forward to it all being over.

'The thought of another year with Louis is just too much for him to bear. He says he will only consider coming back if Louis leaves.'

The source said Louis, who has been on the show since it started in 2004, has lost his enthusiasm for the show and he misses working with Simon and Dannii Minogue.

'In previous years Louis was Simon’s right-hand man and has been heavily involved in the production of the show.

'He was regularly backstage, bouncing ideas around, especially when it came to novelty acts. But there hasn’t been any of that this year.

'He has barely spoken to anyone other than Tulisa.

'Many people think it would be best if Gary got his wish and Louis left.”

A source close to Gary said he and Louis had been friends for years before appearing on the X Factor.

'Louis helped Gary during some of his darkest days and was there for him when Take That split up and he needed to get his demos heard.

The Originals: Simon, Sharon Osbourne and Louis were the first judges on the panel in 2004

'But on a show like this, friendships get strained. They’ll always be mates whatever happens.'

Gary is reportedly unhappy that Louis forged an alliance with Tulisa Contostavlos and his part in the Misha B bullying row.

Tulisa and Louis accused the singer of 'backstage bullying' towards certain female contestants.

More drama came when Kelly became the first judge ever to miss a live show when she refused to return from the US because of a throat infection.

And wannabe rocker Frankie Cocozza was booted from the competition after admitting he had used cocaine.

Last month the show was trounced by rival Strictly every Saturday and week seven saw more people tune into Strictly on both nights.

Rumours that the competition is fixed have also circulated.

A news website announced axed contestant Amelia Lily’s return to the show before the public had voted.

And HMV allowed customers to pre-order her winners’ single, which they blamed on a technical fault.

X Factor favourites Little Mix backed by Simon Cowell to be the next big girl group

'They could be bigger than the Spice Girls': X Factor favourites Little Mix backed by Simon Cowell to be the next big girl group

They've wowed the judges and audiences and viewers alike with their staying power and have become one of this year's most talked about X Factor finalists.

And even if they don't walk away with the coveted crown on Sunday's final show, Little Mix are still set to take the charts by storm, thanks to Simon Cowell.

Reports today have suggested that the music mogul is to give the four girls a record contract worth millions in an attempt to make them stars on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Sun has claimed that Cowell will kick start their pop career with a joint tour with boy band One Direction, who have also found fame after finishing third on last year's show.

Speaking to the newspaper, a source close to Cowell said: 'Simon is thrilled by the quality of this year's finalists - but he's extra excited about Little Mix. He genuinely believes they could be bigger than the Spice Girls.

'He's had huge successes in his career but a massive girl band has not really been one of them.'

And last night, Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall said: 'We'd love to be as good as the Spice Girls.'

The Spice Girls - Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell - shot to fame in 1996 when their debut single Wannabe went to number one in 30 countries and to this day remain the most successful girl group of all time.

Halliwell left in 1998 and three years later in 2001, the remaining members announced they were taking an indefinite hiatus, before all five reformed in 2007 for a year-long world tour.

The source added: 'The Spice Girls set the bar high but Simon thinks there's no reason Little Mix can't better them.

'They are young and they work phenomenally hard, so the sky's the limit. There hasn't been such love for a girl band in years.'

Cowell is set to watch this weekend's final via satellite in Los Angeles and has reportedly been telling his friends in the music industry to watch out for Little Mix who he said are 'going to be massive'.

Even the Spice Girls think so, as Emma Bunton, who was known as Baby Spice, said she was backing them to take the X Factor crown.

She said: 'I really, really hope they win. I think they're brilliant to watch and I think they could be really big.

'They work well together and they've got a great connection. I can see they are having fun and that's what it was like for the Spice Girls. I can see they've got that edge too.'

Why last year's X Factor hopeful Gamu is glad she was abandoned by Cowell and Cheryl

Why last year's X Factor hopeful Gamu is glad she was abandoned by Cowell and Cheryl

By Alison Boshoff

Last updated at 8:02 AM on 2nd December 2011

Not once has Gamu Nhengu been seen to rejoice over the accusations of sleaze, strife and crisis which have engulfed this year’s series of The X Factor; she’s far too nice a person to kick Mr Cowell in the shiny white teeth when he is down.

But, in her own quiet way, it’s clear that she is having the last laugh.

Gamu was, of course, last year’s cannon fodder: everyone was astonished when Cheryl Cole sent her home at the judges’ houses stage in favour of her ‘mini-me’ Cher Lloyd.

Now: Gamu has a much more sassy style for her new album
Now: Gamu has a much more sassy style for her new album
Now and then: Gamu has a much more sassy style for her new album, left, and right, appearing on last year's X Factor

In the days that followed it emerged that Gamu’s family were staying in the UK on an expired visa.

The Home Office moved to expel them and it looked as if Gamu’s bid for fame was to cost them everything. She said that if she was sent back to Zimbabwe she’d face Mugabe’s firing squads.

It was the cause celebre of the series — thousands signed Facebook petitions to support her. Simon Cowell said that he would help every way he could.

But, having kept her own counsel since then, Gamu now reveals that actually after Cheryl dismissed her from the competition she never heard from her or Cowell again.

The idea that Cowell was going to lend the family the free services of his legal team to fight for her right to remain in the country also seems to have been a complete invention.

‘But then, why would they remain in touch once I’d been evicted from the show?’ asks Gamu. ‘It wasn’t an easy experience but I’m able now to look back on it from a distance and see what it gave me, and I’m grateful for that.’

What it gave her, she says, is a better understanding of the way that showbusiness works — which you may well decode as an understanding that there may be a show of sympathy, but it’s still just a business.

Perhaps this philosophical bent is possible now because the crisis is coming to an end — she’s getting her passport and her musical career without Cowell.

After she left the X Factor, her family was told that they would have to leave the UK as their visa had expired.

After various twists and turns in that saga, her manager John Richardson now confirms to me that Gamu’s right to stay has now come through. She will be a full British citizen.

She must be delighted, I suggest. ‘The matter is closed, so I won’t comment,’ she replies, wary of causing a fuss.

Campaign: Thousands signed Facebook petitions to support Gamu when the Home Office moved to deport her - she eventually won her appeal to remain in the UK

It’s a rare piece of good news for the singer, now 20 years old, who suffered an emotional collapse after her X Factor disaster.

She had been led to believe that her performances had been enough to keep her in the competition. Indeed she had seemed to be one of the very strongest contenders with her powerful voice.

But Cher Lloyd, who snuffled and trembled through her song, laid low with a throat infection, was preferred. Gamu says that at the time that she was completely dumbstruck and believed that her dreams of making it as a singer were at an end. She wept for weeks.

But now she feels that the rejection makes sense — and she understands that it might be possible to make it as a singer without being an X Factor artist.

She tells me: ‘I can see now why it happened. I didn’t have the right street image like Cher. I just didn’t fit the bill for Cheryl.

'It’s not easy but I understand that it’s a competition and that is the way it goes. I hold no ill feeling.’

But although she was told in the initial weeks after losing out that many major record labels wanted to sign her up, nothing came of it. Instead she has sat by and watched all of her peers on the show release records.

‘I can see now why it happened. I didn’t have the right street image like Cher. I just didn’t fit the bill for Cheryl.'

She was, like all contestants, compelled to sign a management agreement with the company which manages all X Factor artists. Which meant that she could be kept in obscurity by the Cowell machine.

John Richardson says: ‘They tell them to sit there and shut up. I think that for six months she was basically waiting for something to happen.

We sent her management dozens of emails and didn’t get a single response. We had a proposal which would have netted her £25,000 but we didn’t hear a peep back.

‘Earlier this year Gamu asked to be released, and now at last she is free.’

Since escaping the clutches of the show she has got a publishing deal, and a record deal, and has spent the past couple of months in the studio making an album.

About half of the songs are written by her, and she describes them as ‘pretty old school, with a very classic Motown feel’.

One of her collaborators is Lamont Dozier, a Motown legend who wrote for The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas and the Four Tops. He has written a song for her, which is quite a coup.

The album should be released in March next year. It’s a long time, of course, since October 2010 when she was big news, but Gamu’s big break might be finally about to arrive.

Simon Cowell unleashes his acid tongue on X Factor USA as contestants AND judges feel his wrath

Mr Nasty is back! Simon Cowell unleashes his acid tongue on X Factor USA as contestants AND judges feel his wrath

  • Cowell slates almost every act other than his own
  • Brands LA Reid 'the devil' and Paula and Nicole 'witches'
  • Host Steve Jones also put in his place and told to 'shut it'
  • But wins favour with fans, proving most popular judge in Twitter poll

He made his name by being music’s Mr Nasty, and it appears Simon Cowell has gone back to his highly critical roots.

The music mogul and X Factor boss proved to be as catty and disparaging as ever to the acts, except for his own of course.

While the contestants found themselves on the receiving end of his bitter disappointment Simon didn't appear to hold back with the other judges either calling them 'witches' and even host Steve Jones was told to 'shut it'.

Harsh words: Simon Cowell didn't hold back on tonight's episode of X Factor USA and was happy to criticise the other judges as well as the acts

While LeRoy Bell, Melanie Amaro and Lakoda Rayne faced the strongest criticism, the Syco boss also used every available opportunity to slam his fellow judges, calling them 'witches' and LA Reid 'the devil'.

But despite his acid-tongue it appears Simon is proving popular with fans and was named the favourite by fans of the show on Twitter.

The song choices proved to be the hot topic of the evening with the rock songs picked by the mentors proving to be the most contentious remarks made by Cowell.

As the Welsh presenter told the audience:'All the acts are performing rock songs or songs in a rock style,' it appeared the genre of music was interpreted loosely by the judges.

LeRoy Bell opened with Bob Seger’s We’ve Got Tonight but his performance left the judges including Simon disappointed.

The 60-year-old took to the stage in a leather vest, with his sleeve tattoo on show but despite Nicole’s fervent clapping the other judges seemed less than impressed.

LA Reid appeared unimpressed with LeRoy's performance and he said: ‘We’re no longer simply trying to get through to the next round we are now looking for stardom.'

'You look great you sound great but you're still not working it like a rock star. You're good man, but I need more, $5million this is the big time.'

Paula Abdul added: 'There is no mistaking you have a beautiful voice. I think what LA is saying is that it’s live television and it needs to be more of a connection.'

Unoriginal? LeRoy Bell failed to impress the judges with his version of Bob Seger¿s We¿ve Got Tonight

Simon agreed and said: 'Nice song, good voice, but in terms of originality hearing a new version of this song zero this is my problem.'

But Mr Cowell couldn't pass up an opportunity to criticise Nicole and quipped: 'You are being mentored like a session singer. We have heard the same type of songs four weeks in a row.

You should have been like a shark, you were like a dolphin. Right now you can’t win this competition.'

Feisty: Simon Cowell told LeRoy he was more like a dolphin than a shark and he also interjected while Steve Jones was trying to speak and told him to 'shut it'

Meanwhile Nicole simply told her act: 'I believe in you,' she added: 'Thank you LeRoy for being so courageous for going after your dream.'

As Steve Jones tried to talk to LeRoy Simon cut in and told him to 'shut it' saying his comments weren't 'horrible'.

After the oldest singer in the competition opened the show, the youngest singer took to the stage.

The judges took to their feet to congratulate the 13-year-old with a standing ovation.

Nicole told the teenager: 'So rock and roll originated from rhythm and blues so that was the perfect song choice,' before adding 'You made it look so easy up there.'

She told the former drug addict: 'I love that song that was very original and I rocked with it, but it’s not my favourite performance by you, I was a little confused with the track the music and the hybrid.'

Simon also slammed the song choice and said: 'I love the performance but it would have been great if the theme this week had been reggae music. The theme is rock music, LA.'

He added: 'What’s the point in having a theme if you are going to disregard it.'

LA Reid challenged Simon: 'Ok lets do a hip hop week and see what Drew does?'

Next up was Stacy Francis who sang Meatloaf's It's All Coming Back to Me Now, but the singer once again found herself in Simon's firing line.

He slammed her by saying the good news was that her hair 'looks better this week'.

However the compliment was followed by a flurry of negative comments.

Cowell opinionated: 'I thought the song was a horrible choice. I knew when I saw the feathered microphone, I knew what was coming.'

'I wanted rock that was a pebble it was soft it was the sort of thing I would expect someone to sing at the Hilton Hotel. This is not a cabaret.'

Meanwhile LA Reid told her: 'You really sang that song really well. I’m going to leave it at that.'

Once again Nicole was left justifying her decisions and told Stacy: 'There is a genre of music called glam rock and you are glam rock diva tonight.'

While Simon was extremely supportive and positive about his act Melanie Amaro, the song choice of REM's Everybody Hurts left LA Reid hitting back at Simon.

Melanie put on a simple understated with a piano and smoke skirting around the stage she sat on a stool while Simon clapped enthusiastically from his judges seat.

Nicole was equally unimpressed and said: 'You sounded beautiful this is one of my favourite songs and every time I hear it I cry and this time I didn’t.'

But despite the criticism the crowd were heard chanting: 'Mel-anie'.

Simon gushed over his act and told her: 'That reminded me of Adele, Alicia Keys'.'

His mentor Nicole, loved the performance and couldn’t stop headbanging along and for once the other judges were in agreement.

LA told him: 'You have the authenticity you have the stage presence and You're the only person that's really rocked this house tonight,' while Paula said his show was 'amazing'.

Simon told him: 'Josh never ever listen to a single person again. Because that was bloody fantastic.'

Paula even complimented her fellow judge and shouted: ‘Way to go Nicole’

The former Pussycat doll singer told her act: 'You are the ultimate rock star that is how its done America.'

Astro was the next to take to the stage and rapped about an old friend and the fall of hip-hop in the style of P. Diddy's I'll Be Missing You.

Paula gushed about his performance and complained: 'Can you just suck for once. You are phenomenal you are amazing.'

And Astro even commanded the compliments of Mr Cowell and he said: 'This is two weeks in a row, what’s amazing you have got more maturity than some of the other contestants in the show.'

'I think you have a shot of winning this young man.'

His mentor LA Ried told him: 'You have everything it takes to be a major international star.'

But despite his unusually optimistic comments to Astro he was back to being negative and Simon told the girl group: 'I thought tonight was a complete mess.'

He described parts of the performance as 'ridiculous' and 'gimmicky' which left Mr Reid telling his co-judge he was being 'mean'.

It was after this critical assessment that Cowell was revealed to be the most popular judge among fans with 53% of the votes on Twitter.

With his bravado running high Simon quipped: 'I did join twitter this evening officially I'm just a bit confused why it is only 53%.' The music mogul used his new Twitter account to speak to fans and posted: 'I love being on twitter. Thank you for allowing me to beat the other 3 in the popularity poll. Paula looked like she'd sucked on a lemon!'

After Simon's ego boost his act Drew made her way onto the stage to perform U2's With or Without You, which was delivered in a style that verged on ethereal.

LA Reid told the teen she said the 'most original voice' in the competition but he was 'pushing for more'.

Nicole was critical too and said: 'Drew you know how much I adore you I love that song but I was waiting for the tempo to pick up. This is the slowest rock song. I’m a little frustrated.'

Once again Simon used the opportunity to slam his fellow judges and told Drew: 'Take no notice from the three witches on my right hand side.'

Last to perform to fight for his right to stay in the competition for the $5million recording contract was Marcus Canty who revealed he was apprehensive about performing a raunchy song given his religious beliefs.

Simon once again used to the opportunity to snipe at LA Reid and told Marcus that his mentor was the 'Devil' for choosing Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart.
