One Direction confirmed their top boy band status after they were chased by a legion of female fans through London.

The former X Factor finalists brought the West End to a halt when filming their new single yesterday as girls sprinted through the streets for a glimpse of the pin-ups.

In scenes that were reminiscent of Beatlemania, One Direction's fans caused a stampede of their own as they ran past the Lyceum Theatre where The Lion King was being shown.

The boys had tweeted earlier that they would be in Trafalgar Square, London to film scenes for their new music video and third single One Thing.

Harry Styles wrote: 'Trafalgar Square... Let's Do It!!!'

They were hardly incognito as they used an open top red bus to get around the capital and waved to fans as they drove past several West End theatres.

Zayn Malik tweeted: 'Trafalgar square come and bring every1 let's party (sic)', while Louis Tomlinson wrote: 'Big red bus in westminster. Come find us.'

As the boys were driven through London, more and more girls turned up and began to frantically follow them.

Their screaming fans pointed as One Direction waved to them from the bus and some girls even broke down and cried tears of joy as the emotion became to much.

Some of the young fans had come straight from school and were still wearing their uniforms but the long day proved worth it when the boys asked the girls to take part in the video alongside them.

The lads were clearly enjoying being the centre of attention but Harry had better be careful after already getting some flack this week for his way with the ladies.

The 17-year-old, who is reportedly dating Caroline Flack, 31, has been exchanging a series of flirty messages on Twitter with a young female music executive.

Caroline is said to be 'humiliated' by his actions and a source told the Daily Mirror: 'It's a bit of a reminder that Harry is a teenage boy and not someone she can seriously date.'

One Direction's new video is the first one to be filmed by the boy band in the UK after traveling to California and New York for their last two singles.

The boys are also featured on this year's X Factor charity single called Wishing On A Star.
